Tycoon Tidbits "Tycoons Defeat Manchester"

Monday Feb.11, 2008
Manchester, NH:

The 4th ranked Texas Tycoons defeated the 3rd ranked Manchester Millrats 123-122 on the road at Manchester this past Saturday February 9th. The Millrats (18-10) hosted the Texas Tycoons (16-1) at home in New Hampshire for a battle of top level ABA power rankings.

Leaving their homes in Texas at 5:30am on the day of the big game for the long cross-country travel, the Tycoons knew they would have to focus in and man up for the evening game hosted by the home team Manchester Millrats. After traveling all day and arriving in New Hampshire, the Tycoons focused in on the task at hand from the start of pre-game warm ups, till the final seconds ticked off the clock to come back home with a strong Win against a good opponent.

'Our focus and mental toughness on the road against a good team paid off with a quality win, our Tycoons team is a family and has really bonded and come together' stated Tycoons Head Coach Jean-Paul Afif

The Tycoons fought hard all game, with a well balanced scoring attack, and tenacious defense to set the tone. Big Man Randall Williams (6'8''-F/C-82, college: Tarleton St.) and guard Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Sam Houston St.) displayed a great inside out game leading the Tycoons on the court, playing every possession with a passion. With 9 Tycoon players suited up for the game, Texas had 7 out 9 players with double digit scoring efforts.

Guard Mario Kinsey led Texas with 22pts, 6 assists and 2 steals, followed closely by fellow guard Melvin Mitchell (6'2''-G, college: Cameron) with 19pts, 4 assists, and 2 steals on 67% shooting from the 2pt field and 60% from the 3pt line in 24 minutes. Forward Randall Williams set the tone for the Tycoons in the paint and on the glass dominating the boards for both teams with 13 rebounds, including 8 offensive, 4 of which were rebound tip dunks, to go with 3 huge, intimidating blocks. Williams was one of 2 tycoons to have a double-double along with Ty Thomas (6'6''-F, college: Concordia-St.Paul) who finished with 15pts, and a solid 11 rebounds to go with 2 assists and a steal.

Guard Dameon Sansom (6'1''-G-75, college: Texas St.-San Marcos) entered the game off the bench knocking down 5 of 8 from the 3pt line (63%) claiming key possessions down the stretch for the Tycoons with his clutch shooting, and free throws to seal the win. Aside from making shots, Dameon showed to be a leader and floor general on the court with no turnovers and 17pts in his 20 minutes of play.

Portugal bound Donald Gray (6'6''-F-84, college: N.Mexico Highlands) filled up a stat sheet with 10pts, 7 rebs, 2 assists, 1 blk, and 2 steals for a solid performance also placing defensive pressure on Manchester all game, along with scrappy guard Steven Dunn, aka Turk. Turk entered the game with relentless defensive pressure, and sparked the Tycoons with his tenacious defensive leadership and presence on the court. Steven Dunn had a extremely efficient 10pts in 11minutes of play to go with 5 rebs, 3 assists, and a steal.

The Tycoons team basketball and defensive intensity posed to much for the Millrats down the stretch, as Forward Taron Hill banged his way in the paint to 8 pts, 6 rebs (4 offensive) and 2 massive blocks, followed by Jonathan Young (6'3''-G-84, college: Schreiner) 5pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists and a steal. Jonathon filled his defensive assignment while in the game with heavy deny defense, and unwavering ball pressure.

The Texas Tycoons are gearing up for the playoffs and the road to win the ABA Championship. The Tycoons hope to dispel and questions about their team players, their quality of play, or strength of schedule with this key 123-122 road win against the 3rd ranked Manchester Millrats.

'As an organization we do our best every year to sort through players and field the best talent Texas has to offer. We feel all of our players are not only high quality professional basketball players, but also quality individuals as well. We know our players have what it takes to play at the next level, but more so than that any player who has on a Tycoon jersey is a Soldier.' Texas Tycoon General Manager Mike Senters .

Tycoon Tidbits "Gut Check"

By Mike Senters - Saturday Feb. 2, 2008
Desoto, Tx.

Down by four with :38 seconds remaining, the Texas Tycoons rallied to defeat an assembly of Texas Pro Stars by the score of 101-99. Recently, the Tycoons have filled open dates on the ABA schedule with inter-league games. However, something about this game was different.

Insisting that they would defeat the Tycoons, this particular group of veteran players were relentless in their effort to schedule games versus the third ranked team in the ABA. Consequently, the Tycoons' opposition loaded its roster with several players that boast European, LNBP, Cibacopa, CBA and WBA playing experience. In addition, the Tycoons were playing without a number of key players that were either released or out with the flu.

The Tycoons needed someone to step up in a major way. While posting a triple double, Point Guard Mario Kinsey may have played his best game as a Tycoon. The former Kansas signee lead the way with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Forward Randall Williams controlled the glass with 16 rebounds. Ty Thomas, Steven Dunn and Donald Gray added 18, 14, and 15 points respectively.

But in the final seconds, a new acquisition sealed the win for the Tycoons. During a game changing possession, the Tycoons' Tee Hill blocked a shot from underneath the basket all the way out to the three point line! The long block served as an outlet pass which ignited a Tycoons' fast break. After the big block, Hill sprinted from the defensive post to the offensive glass, rebounding the Tycoons' missed shot. Hill was fouled on his put back dunk attempt.

With the game and bragging rights on the line, Hill calmly stepped up and nailed both free throws. The 15-1 Texas Tycoons survived a scare, but truly played as a team and got better in the process. The Tycoons would like to thank the Desoto Elite Jr. Cheerleaders for an excellent halftime performance alongside the Lady Tycoon dancers. Special thanks to the Source Magazine, Down Magazine, Skinny Deville of Platinum recording hip hop group the Nappy Roots and MTV Jams regular Tabi Bonney for their attendance and support of the Tycoons.

Next up for the Tycoons is a Feb 9th road game vs. the powerful Manchester Millrats!

Tycoons soundly defeat Whirlwinds

By Jean-Paul Afif - December 06, 2007

Midland, TX - The Texas Tycoons defeated the West Texas Whirlwinds last night on the road in Midland Texas by 61pts, and a final score of 139-78. Tyrone Rayson (6'6''-F-80, college: East Central) led all scorers with 34 points in 24 minutes, while the Tycoons played tough nose defense, and team ball on offense with 8 out of 10 Tycoon players putting up double digits on the road.

Texas Tycoons New Head Coach Jean-Paul Afif was quoted as saying "I am really proud of my guys, they played hard all game long regardless of the score. They were all on the same page together defensively, and played team ball on offense. They executed plays and calls on both sides of the floor, and didnt let the officials, the road trip, or anything else take their focus off the task at hand. We are really starting to come together as a team, and it is always good do get a convincing win on the road."

All 10 Tycoons contributed on a number of different levels whether, offensively, defensively, rebounding, getting loose balls, assists, or just being a leader and helping to run the team while on the floor. The Tycoons came out with a well balanced attack of 10 players who all averaged about 24 minutes each for the game, and had some impressive stats: Tyrone Rayson 34pts, Donald Gray (6'6''-F-84, college: N.Mexico Highlands) 20pts, Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Sam Houston St.) 19pts, Randall Williams (6'8''-F/C-82, college: Tarleton St.), Ty Thomas (6'6''-F, college: Concordia-St.Paul), and Jonathan Young (6'3''-G-84, college: Schreiner) all contributed 13pts respectively. Newcomer Chris Johnson (6'2''-G, college: Tarleton St.) pitched in 11pts, followed closely by fellow newcomer Andre Heard (6'3''-G-83, college: Binghamton) with 10pts. Point Guard Melvin Mitchell (6'2''-G, college: Cameron) really set the tone for the Tycoons with his fundamental on ball defense, and 14 assists on offense, really taking over the point guard role, and leading his team running the offenses and getting everyone involved. Othello Alford (5'11''-G-84, college: SW Oklahoma St.) pushed the tempo while in the game, and is possibly one of the most athletic guards for his size in the ABA.

The Tycoons were without starting forward Jai Pradia (6'6''-F-79, college: Pittsburg St.) who is playing in the FIBA Americas "Americas League" being held in Puerto Rico. Starting guard Brandon Lee (6'2''-G, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Tarleton St.) was also out during the game and helped with player substitutions, and rotations.

The Tycoons face the West Texas Whirlwinds again tonight, but this time at home, and are expecting the same outcome, if not better. Texas Tycoons' Sawadogo and Mims drafted into the NBA D-League

Bakersfield, CA - The 2007/2008 NBA D-League Draft was held last week and two former players for the Texas Tycoons were drafted into the league.
Aristide Sawadogo (7'1''-C-81, college: Clayton St.) was a force inside for Texas last season and will continue his growth as a player for the Dakota Wizards, drafted in the 5th round. Sawadogo is an extremely intelligent player that sees the floor well for a big man. He is excellent at altering shots and using his wingspan to crash the glass. Sawadogo also has a very nice touch from the charity stripe and runs the floor well for such a big guy. Oneal Mims (6'10''-F-82, college: Angelo St.) was also drafted by the NBADL, as the Bakersfield Jam selected him in the 7th round. Mims is a 6'10 wing player that can handle the ball, shoot the three, and can run and finish on the break. Mims is also an excellent defender and his length and athleticism on the wing is NBA level.

Coach Chris Terrell stated "I'm really proud of the development of these two young men. Aristide stayed with my family and I during our time in Dallas. He is an excellent representative of any organization he is affiliated with. At 7'2 and a wingspan of over 7 and a half feet, e has tremendous size and is an intimidating pressence in the paint. O'Neal is just starting to figure out how much talent he really has. He's able to handle the ball in the open court, is a terrific passer, and plays the game well above the rim with a 45 inch verticle at 6'10. Both players have NBA aspirations and have excellent size and length for their positions. I'm really excited for them, I know this is the start of something special in their careers. I think they missed a couple guys in the draft, but we have 7 players overseas, 3 with NBA workouts, and now 2 more drafted into the D-League, so we're very proud of those accomplishments."

Texas, the 2006/2007 ABA White Conference and South Division Champions in the ABA last season, was derailed in the ABA Championship Game by the Vermont Frostheaves but their 25-5 record, league leading 133 points per game, and tremendous success with developing and placing players abroad speaks volumes. Tycoons Head Coach Chris Terrell has been forced to take a leave of absence from his post with Texas due to family reasons but is hoping to back with the team shortly and work towards aiding in the continued successes of the organization.
Texas opened the season with a convincing 20 point victory on the road at Houston Friday night, led by Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Texas Coll.) 30 points and Brandon Lee (6'3''-G, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Tarleton St.) connecting often from the land of triple en route to 29.

Texas is gearing up for their home opener Saturday November 10th at the DeSoto Town Center: 211 E. PLEASANT RUN RD, DESOTO, TX 75115. The game jumps off at 7:15. Don't miss the stars of today and tomorrow; Texas Tycoons Pro Basketball. www.txtycoons.com
